A walk through the new Sutter Capitol Pavilion and along its 28th Street face offers a chance to see a carefully selected collection of photography, paintings, fabric, glass and metal sculpture produced by local and regional artists. The Sutter planning team and Kira Stewart, owner of Art Consulting Services and an artist in her own right, collaborated in the selection process for the new building. The abstract and traditional pieces feature themes that include the water and trees for which Sacramento is known for, the historical setting and the emerging urban art scene. The consistent theme running through the collection is its soothing appeal, as the pieces combine to create a space for healing.
It’s not only the patients that will benefit from the artwork, but also the artists who have been commissioned to create pieces for the building.
“People also ask me, ‘what inspires you?’,” said Cathy Mullenberg, fabric artist. “For me, it’s a complicated question and the answer becomes rather personal. In a nut shell, my art is all about healing. My healing. My art has kept joy in my life. It has motivated me to keep seeking the wonders of the world and to give back to all the many Guardian Angels who have supported me in my greatest time of need. If my work can bring a smile to someone’s face, then hopefully that joy will lead them one step closer towards their healing as well.”
